Besides the awesome Incredible Hulk sketches I was able to get at Heroes Con, this years show was also special because Stan Lee was a special guest. I had to take the opportunity to get the special package to get a picture taken with Stan and to get his autograph. Friday night I was able to go to the Heroes are Hard to Find comic shop and listen to Stan tell stories and answer questions. On Saturday, I was able to get my picture taken with him. It was done in a rather assembly line manner, moving people through as quick as possible, but I completely understand. After the picture was taken, I was walking away and told Stan that he was the man. He replied “damn right I am.” Classic Stan. The next day I took the picture that was taken and had him autograph it. Opportunity of a lifetime.
Heroes Convention or Heroes Con as it is also known, is the oldest comic book convention in the US and this year, it celebrated it’s 30th year. I love going to this convention and meeting and talking to various artists and writers. I bring my sketch book and try to get artists whose style I like to do Planet Hulk commissions and sketches. This year was a great success. Jim Calafiore actually had my book before the convention and did an amazing double page piece. I was lucky enough to get on the short list of Skottie Young watercolor sketches and Skottie always delivers some mind blowing art. Charles P. Wilson III did the recent Pooh-style cover variant for an Incredible Hulk issue so I of course had him do a Planet Hulk pooh version and I can not believe the amount of detail he put into it. I met a couple of guys who are known as the Creaturebox who live in the right town by me. Love their unique style. Lastly, I got the talented Cary Nord to do a Planet Hulk. While I was waiting for artists to work on my book, I used a blank comic book art page and got artists to do quick Hulk head sketches. First up was David Williams and then the classic and very talented Herb Trimpe. Next was David Wachter who has a very old school style. Next was Mark Brooks, who is a super nice guy to talk to and has a lot of talent (I will get him to do a full size Planet Hulk next year if it kills me!) and lastly was Clayton Crain. He was doing commissions with acrylic paint and it was incredible watching him work. This is probably my favorite con experience as I got some awesome artwork plus I got to spend some time with a fellow Hulk artwork collector Dave Wilkins.
Along with exclusive Marvel Universe Avengers sets, Wal-Mart also has a wave of 6″ Marvel Legends size Avengers figures featuring Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Captain America, and of course the Hulk. This Avengers Hulk figure is by far the best looking Hulk figure that has come out in awhile. The sculpt looks really clean and the face sculpt really captures the look of the Hulk from the movie. While this figure is very hard to find (there is only one per box), it is worth tracking down and adding it to your collection.
For Father’s Day, my kids got me an Incredible Hulk Build-a-Bear which is way cool. At the Build-a-Bear store, they also have Iron Man and Captain America bears in honor of the Avengers movie but of course the Hulk is the best. Go get one for yourself and one for your kids.
In the beginning issues of the recent relaunch of the Incredible Hulk comic book, the Hulk was living underground and had a scraggly beard. Looks like Diamond Select was so inspired by it, that they are going to release an action figure of it under the Marvel Select line. It is a completely new sculpt with 16 points of articulation and is 10 inches tall. And given that it is Marvel Select, it will probably weigh a ton! While I have not been happy with the direction of the Hulk relaunch, I do think the figure looks good so I will definitely be getting it.
According to an article on Newsarama, it looks like Jason Aaron will be leaving as current writer on the Incredible Hulk comic book:
“In a Q&A published earlier this week on Marvel.com, Marvel senior editor Mark Paniccia announced that Aaron will be leaving Incredible Hulk, saying, “Jason’s got a really great handle on the character and is building a conclusion to his run.” Newsarama has confirmed with Marvel that this does indeed mean that Aaron is wrapping up his Incredible Hulk run, although when remains unrevealed.”
I have not been the happiest with the current run since the relaunch, mostly due to the fact I have not liked the characterization of Bruce Banner as both mad and evil. It just doesn’t fit who the character has been for the last 50 years (and yes the Hulk turns 50 this year, let’s celebrate!!!!) I am hoping the next writer can get Bruce and the Hulk a bit more on track.
Also of note is that the Hulk comic book starring Red Hulk was missing from the Septermber Solicitations. Not sure what that means but I doubt if that book is cancelled, Jeff Parker is doing a great job as writer on it since he took over.

Everyone is going Avengers crazy!!!!! Now Marvel Select, made by Diamond Select, has come out with an Incredible Hulk figure based on the Avengers movie. They did a great job on the sculpt and it looks like the Hulk’s face in the movie. And like most Marvel Select figures, this is one heavy figure. I think you could hurt someone with this thing. Not a ton of articulation but the sculpting looks spot on. Definitely an add to your Hulk action figure collection.
